About Happy Birthday Jo, Happy Birthday We Animals!

Hello dear friends, colleagues, and family!

I turn 48 this December, and We Animals has its fifth birthday as an NGO.
🎁🎁🎂🎂🍰🍰🎉🎉🥳🥳🎈🎈🍾🍾🎁🎁🎂🎂🍰🍰🎉🎉🥳🥳🎈🎈🍾🍾

Getting people to think about animals is a slog!

Despite the challenges in advocating for animals, look at us all go! Speaking up. Showing up. Innovating. Writing. Documenting. Leading. Learning. Legislating. Educating. Cooking. Eating our veggies and getting stronger as we build community, confidence, and strategy.

I have a hopeful and action–oriented mindset, and I'm so grateful that you join me and We Animals on this path!

I love lists, so here are some reasons I’m asking for your support for my beloved We Animals this year.

Five things we’re proud of (Only five? I’m trying to be thematic and succinct!).

  1. We are a strong and ever-growing resource for media and anyone helping animals. And this resource of over 30,000 visuals is free to advocates.

  2. Creating a new genre of photography. Who even does that? Animal photojournalism is here to stay.

  3. Visibility. Through books, films, exhibits, talks, and awards, we’re using our skills as storytellers to make animals seen.

  4. Our tempered growth while working hard for animals AND building a work culture that we can be proud of.

  5. Supporting others. We believe that helping others is foundational to a strong animal advocacy movement, and we use our unique skills to do so through partnerships, mentoring, our fellowships, and more.

Five things that we look forward to.

  1. More photographers and filmmakers in the field. Assignments ensure that animal uses and abuses are not kept in the dark.

  2. Broader media and non-profit organization partnerships, because we know that teamwork makes the dream work (cheesy rhyme but it’s just so true!)

  3. Increasingly diverse and stable funding so that we can do this work for as long as is necessary.

  4. The complete normalization and integration of animal photojournalism into the world of photography, media, academia, and society.

  5. A world in which animals live free from human harm. That’s our Vision, which you can see with our Mission, Purpose, and Values, here. I’d like our work to soon be in the history books, with factory farming and other nefarious animal uses nowhere in present sight.

What do you think?

Can we do it?

I think we have to. I know I have to.

The animals are waiting. They need us. Millions of animals have looked at me, either with fear and desperation, or with a clear request for help.

And I need you! To help me on our mission to make this a much, much better place for them.

There are lots of ways to support this 48th birthday fundraiser.

  • You can make it fun by donating a multiple of five or ten!
  • For my 48th, you can donate $4.80, $48.00, $480.00, or even $4,800.00.
  • When you donate $100 or more we will send you a beautiful 8" X 10" matte print signed by me!
  • Plus, Vegan Grants has offered to match every year-end donation, so your gift will go twice as far!

Thank you for helping me help animals, and making my birthday wishes come true.
